Communicate English School teaches the skills of speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar, although there is a particular focus on communication. The courses use many different techniques to help you improve your English. Using modern course books and a wide range of our resource materials, students can expect to take on an active role in the classroom. We put a special emphasis on social English - students learn the language useful for everyday social, study or work life - including discussions, conversations, presenting information and telephoning. Grammar is taught in a meaningful context.
We focus on student-centred learning and methods which help using the language in everyday life:
- DIRECT METHOD - we find it especially helpful for practising speaking and listening skills.
Students learn English as a child learns its own language: first through ear, then through the mouth, then through the eye, and finally through the hand. The student like a child first hears the word spoken, then imitates what he hears, later he sees the word written, and then finally writes it himself.
The teacher asks students a series of questions which the students must answer. Because the Method aims to get students to speak, classes hold the attention of students and stimulate their memory. The student has to listen per fifteen seconds each minute (four times as much) because the class is bombarded by questions posted by the teacher and the student doesn't know his turn. It trains the student to hear English spoken at faster than normal conversational speed, so that when he hears the language spoken outside the classroom, he has no difficulty understanding it.
- CLT - COMMUNICATIVE LANGUAGE TEACHING - very useful for practising grammar, reading, writing and pronunciation
Lessons are often organized by grammatical structure and presented through short dialogues. Students listen repeatedly to recordings of conversations and focus on accurately mimicking the pronunciation and grammatical structures in these dialogs.
The method involves:
- An emphasis on learning to communicate through interaction in the target language
- The introduction of authentic texts into the learning situation.
- Role play
- Interviews
|
- Information gap
- Games
- Language exchange
- Surveys
- Pair work
|
- TBL - TASK-BASED LEARNING - especially good for practising vocabulary, developing fluency and student confidence.
The method focuses on the use of authentic language and on asking students to do meaningful tasks using the target language. Such tasks can include visiting a doctor, conducting an interview, or calling customer service for help. TBL also allows the facilitator to use authentic topic material, which is relevant to the participants' needs and encourages the development of skills necessary for the successful completion of real-life tasks. This makes TBL especially popular for developing target language fluency and student confidence.
